What is Growth Marketing?

First things first, what actually is Growth Marketing and how is it different from traditional marketing?

I describe growth marketing as a more holistic approach to marketing; looking beyond channels at the entire customer journey from start to finish to enable growth. As a growth consultant, I am not only looking at marketing channels, but also diving into area's like product-market-fit (market research) and retention.

The core of growth strategies is balancing short vs. long term goals; something I'm continuously challenging my clients on. To actually reach your goals, having a structured approach and running experiments across the funnel to learn what works and what doesn't, is crucial during the collaboration.

My Approach

Before I kick off a collaboration, there is a specific foundation that needs to be in place.

Why? Because this eliminates the risk of building on shaky foundations that might hinder growth.

For example: I won't advise to launch a new campaign if measurement is not properly set up, as this will hinder results.

The 5-step framework on the left forms the basis of my overall approach on a day-to-day basis: doing continuous research, ideations, prioritzation and testing, to generate learnings and help companies grow.

My Approach

Before I kick off a collaboration, there is a specific foundation that needs to be in place. Input needs to be shared about the company's current situation. In case some of the input is missing, my advice might be to first invest in building the right foundation. This might be a research, measurement or data analytics trajectory.

Kicking Things Off

Step 1.
Introductory call

The first step is for us is to schedule a 15 minute introductory call.

This gives us the chance to get to know each other and discuss your company's current situation and needs. Based on our call, we can decide if we want to move forward to the next step where I will dive deeper into your current growth efforts to determine the right scope.

Step 2.
Defining the right
growth strategy

If we decide to more forward after the introductory call, I will ask you to answer a few questions about your company, so that I can get a better understanding of your current situation.

Some founders or growth managers already have lots of insights and a clear understanding of their current situation and needs. They already know exactly what they're looking for in a growth consultant.

Others prefer to get someone in with a fresh perspective, giving a cart blanche to go through everything that's been done so far. In the last case, I will perform a growth audit to analyse your current offers, website, measurement set-up, and channels, to help find the right growth opportunities to focus on in the first period.

Step 3.
Kick-Off & Trial

All new clients are offered a trial period to determine if it's the right fit.

Based on the research from the previous step, I will share a proposal for the first month with clear targets and deliverables to ensure we're aligned.

In most cases, the first month is used for me to help get the foundation further in place. For example:

Improving your measurement set-up;

Offering a PMF-trajectory in which I help perform market and customer research;

Conversion rate and website analysis, offering a backlog of experiment ideas to help improve conversion.

Step 4.
Retrospective

It's time to look back on our first month of working together.

Next-steps can be shared based on my initial research, with a planning and proposal for the next period.

Step 5.
Ongoing retainer

Most clients switch to an ongoing retainer after the trial period, during which weekly stand-ups and monthly analyses, retrospectives and planning sessions are scheduled.

I value building personal relationships with clients and prefer long-term partnerships over short-term projects, becoming part of the team and working and guiding others.
